Monte Cristo Sandwich

September 17th is National Monte Cristo Day, a day to celebrate this classic sandwich. With French origins, this sandwich gained popularity in the 1960s when Disneyland in California began serving it to guests. It has stood the test of time, as it is still a classic dish being served at multiple restaurants in the park, including Cafe Orleans and the Blue Bayou.

Though we have not been to Disneyland yet, we are hoping to go next year on our honeymoon! We decided to try our own version at home to tide us over until we can have the real thing.

What begins as a simple turkey and ham sandwich ends as a crispy, melted delight. The sandwich is dipped in batter and fried to perfection. The savory flavor is contrasted with a little powdered sugar and blackberry jam for sweetness, or Cajun remoulade if that's more your style! We served our sandwich with garlic parmesan fries and fresh berries.

We really enjoyed trying something new, and getting a preview of Disneyland snacks (which we hear has even better food than Disney World!). Have you ever had a Monte Cristo? Let us know!
